"Having fun will mean winning"

He is one of the main hopes of the Volkswagen Motorsport team. Mark Miller and Ralph Pitchford don’t hide their will to reach summits after their fourth spot in 2008 and especially their runners-up position last year. The first experience on South American soil was however a bitter one for the American: “With Ralph we really felt disappointed last year but that was due to the last few stages and finishing so close without being allowed to fight for victory (team orders). When I heard about the 2010 route, I really felt excited again”. And hungry for a new adventure! “The thing is that if we have fun, if we enjoy ourselves with Ralph it would probably mean winning”. The Baja specialist will again be among a team including quite a few title contenders: “Each one of us comes from a different background. We all have our strengths. In a sense it’s great to have such a diverse team”. And other than the Volkswagen drivers? “We all know who the fast guys are. I have respect for Stephane (Peterhansel), Nani (Roma), Robbie (Gordon) and even Carlos (Sousa), but I don’t want to worry about the others. There’s nothing personal. I just want to race against the clock, against my clock.” Now used to the paths and deserts of Argentina and Chile, Miller who finished 2nd of the Silk Way Rally, seems delighted by the many dune and sand stages on the course. “The off-road is the determining factor. So that’s where I’ll attack and just make sure I survive the WRC type stages where there’s a lot to loose”. While many expect the likes of Sainz, De Villiers or Al Attiyah to conquer the 2010 Dakar, Marc Miller remains in the shadow, ready to hit hard when needed and fulfil his quest, his passion. After all, just have fun!
