“Whether I win or not, I will have learned a different lesson”

It is hard to find a more enthusiastic competitor than Rafal Sonik. He is as passionate about the Dakar as his sport, quad racing and the love for his country, Poland. He is also not the type to give in but rather react. In 2000, he created Poland's quad federation, ATV Polska, of which he is President. Nine years later, he set off on his first Dakar, in which he finished a glorious third place. Never lost for ideas, he needed more. In addition to his quest for the ultimate victory, he founded the Poland National Team in 2013. The end goal is to take a Polish competitor to stardom, no matter the category, while attracting the biggest sponsors from around the country. Many have rallied to his cause among which there are a few contenders for the win like Dabrowski, Przygonski and Holowczyc. But at the start of the next Dakar, the biggest chance for success is the man himself. Second in 2014, “Super Sonik” won four of the six rallies he competed in this year and finished runner-up in the two others. This accomplished competitor and outstanding businessman, has never seems as philosophical. Victory or not, the Dakar remains a life lesson for the 48-year old rider. He knows that at the end of the next rally, regardless of the outcome, he will have learned something new about himself and the men. After all this is his veritable quest…

“After 2014, I had to be satisfied with finishing second and to have won a stage. It's somewhat remarkable knowing that I lost nearly an hour in looking for a Way-Point. I recently bought a T-shirt that reads: so close, yet so far…But today I have enough patience to say that the Dakar is above else a life lesson. I look at things in a positive way. Life is based on these lessons. It makes me even stronger and even more resistant. Today I still have some big challenges ahead of me, but I am a lot less stressed. My main satisfaction is to have learned not to get upset nor get depressed any more. Only good thing can happen to me. This allows me to accumulate energy in my life. It is impossible to draw better conclusions about yourself than on the Dakar. Whether I win or not in 2015, I will have learned a different lesson. It is a study of life. The race lasts two weeks, the lesson, lasts forever. I have invested a lot of money to be able to compete in the Dakar, but more importantly it is an investment in myself.”
