Sometimes the Dakar is crazy!

You know, sometimes the Dakar is crazy and this stage was like that. The drivers in front of me had some problems and I tried to be really concentrated all through the stage and not make mistakes. Anyway, I've got here and I'm happy, but on the Dakar Valparaiso is still far. We need to be like that and really concentrate every day.

I gave a spare tyre to Peterhansel

We started nicely with a good rythym. We caught up with Nasser, but it was impossible to overtake. Then we caught Giniel de Villiers and they had a puncture. I went past, but I had a puncture after. We changed the wheel and we didn't catch up. But then in the middle of the rio there was Stéphane without any spare tyres, so I decided to stop to give him a tyre. Because of that we lost a little time, but we are here at the finish and we are happy.

A terrible day… we had 6 punctures!

It really was a terrible day for me. Since I've been driving a car I've never had punctures like today. We had 6 punctures. One at the beginning was my fault because we hit a big rock, but after there was some modification in the road-book and it was necessary to cross some vegetation. I was the first car and I think because I ‘cleaned away' a bit of vegetation, after this place I had two or three slow punctures. I think it was a small piece of wood inside the tyre. What can I do? It was necessary to cross the vegetation and I was the first car. After that I think that for the other cars it was a little bit cleaner and easier but it was too late for me.

It was a bit easier for us since the road was open

Yeah, we all had a good clean stage. Maybe it was a little bit easier for us that the road was open. But we had a little bit of traffic: we passed three cars. All in all, everything was good. We'll see – it's our first Dakar and I think we've still got a lot to learn.

In a good position to fight to win the stage tomorrow

Today was much better. The first two days were really hard for us. We had two days of technical problems, so we lost one hour on the first day and one hour again yesterday. To be at the finish today without any technical problems is just wonderful. I'm really happy to be here. That's not exactly the time I was expecting because I was pushing really hard, but when you start like we did this morning in 25th you have so many cars on the road in front of you so it's really hard to come close enough to use the sentinel to tell the guys in front of you to let you past. So, we had to wait until we could get close enough to pass the guys. We lost so much time for this, but still, we are here and what's more we are in a good position to fight to win the stage tomorrow.

A normal stage

For me it was just a normal stage, the first time without any problems. There were two small mistakes for the navigation, but they were really small. Constantin was perfect today. We just took a good tempo, no punctures, no problems, just driving. Sometimes I lost the brakes – I was a little bit too hard on the slow section, but finally there was some water to cool down the brakes. The brakes are still in the same position, not giving vibrations. But, for sure, it was a good day for us.

You never know what happens...

The sad part is that it's only been fuel issues. I don't know if they've changed the blend with the chemical, but we've basically got the same set up as we had last year. We put some additive in last night, changed some rodding and some lines and today we didn't have any problems. We weren't as hot and high as we were when we had the problems on the first two days. It's unfortunate because it's a good race truck. We made up twenty eight minutes on Peterhansel right there so that will take us down from three forty-eight to three fifteen... If we do that a couple more times then you never know what happens...

Like harmony!

I have to say I'm satisfied because yesterday it was really hell for us. I have to thank the machine because when she's listening to me and there is no technical trouble it's like harmony, you know, it's like a concert and we enjoy it. We are really focused on the rest of the stages and we hope we will continue like this.

He must have put some pepper in his ass!

It was very tough. When we had to stop behind all the cars we were on the small bumps and it kills you. You get shaken; your heart, your kidneys... we felt everything. We drove a good race. We played it safe and didn't have any punctures. Suddenly Nikolaev passed us very quickly, so he must have put some pepper in his ass, and I couldn't keep up with him. But 15 km later he broke down with two front wheels completely broken, so he ran out of good luck. We drove the same race and we're happy with the result. There's a long way yet, but it was good.

I want to congratulate the organisation

First the box that holds our drinks, the cooling box, broke loose, so it went jumping through the cabin. Then we had two punctures so we had to change tyres. Afterwards, my navigator had a big bang in his chest. He shouted, so I slowed down on the last part, because he has to see a doctor. It was a very nice Dakar stage. I want to congratulate the organisation for the stages so far, also for the new sentinel, it works perfectly. It's much safer than before, because I passed Van Vliet and I activated the sentinel. He signalled back to me and heard me, so it's much safer than before.

The road is still long

The result doesn't matter today. I had such a good time and enjoyed navigating and riding. The other good news is that I managed to come back well. I'm in the reckoning again. Yesterday, I fell. I don't fall often and I don't like it when that happens. It was a bit of a shock to the system. As for the stage, I set off in 10th position and three riders finished in front of me. I overtook Marc Coma around a dozen kilometres from the finishing line as well as David Casteu. It's been a good day, but the road is still long...

Stage report

Barreda is the best climber, Roma breaks away

In the lead since the start of the rally, Joan Barreda won his second special stage this year and now boasts a lead of more than 13' over Despres and Coma, the two other beneficiaries of a particularly decisive stage. The car race witnessed a perfect performance by Catalan driver Nani Roma in his Mini, who opened up a significant gap on his rivals, taking... [more]
