“The truck is fast but is it reliable?”
Two years after his last appearance on the Dakar and his 19th position, Wuf Van Ginkel returns to the truck race. While he never completely abandoned the event, coming as a mechanic last year, his heart belongs to the race. A lot has happened since he first entered the cabin of Hans Bekx's truck as a co-driver back in 2001. Behind the steering wheel of his truck, Wuf has since 2007 finished three times in the Top 10. And that's the goal again for 2014. The Dutchman will indeed be driving a brand new Ginaf X222 that he started building back in February. In the cabin, he'll have experienced Hugo Kupper and newcomer Bert Van Donkelaar who helped conceive the truck. Part of a three-year plan with team mates Jos Smink and his brother Edwin Van Ginkel, Wuf's ultimate goal will be to reach the podium of the Dakar in the next editions.
W.V.G.: “Last year, I stayed at the bivouac as a mechanic. It was hard not to be in the competition because my heart belongs to the race. We come with a completely new truck and concept. We needed to improve to be able to compete with our rivals. We'll have three racing trucks that we had the opportunity to test out in Morocco. For 2014, our goal is to be in the Top 10. In the close future, we hope to be on the podium within three years. There won't be a first driver in the team. With Smink and my brother Edwin, we have to work together. The best way to have a good result is to help each other. The truck is fast for sure and lighter. Now is it reliable? When I look back at my first Dakar in 2001, the evolution of trucks has been incredible. Ten drivers will start the Dakar to win it.”
