“Finishing would be a victory…”

In terms of motorsports, Gianpaolo Bedin has worked as an engineer in the most prestigious disciplines around, like Formula One (with Osela and Minardi) or Le Mans Series. Then came the "crazy idea", as he puts it himself, to do the Dakar in a car he would design. It took the Italian ten years to work on his concept car. His crazy adventure sadly only lasted two days on the 2013 Dakar. After hours testing in Tunisia and working on improving his Raitec RA01 based on what he witnessed during his first Dakar, Bedin feels he has a far better car. With new co-driver Fabrizio Richiardi with whom he works in Italy, his dream remains the same: to finish…

G.B.: "The crazy idea was to first design the car and then do the Dakar with it. I've worked on the Raitec car for the last ten years. Half the job had been done last year when I went through scrutineering. But the 2013 Dakar didn't go well. I suffered engine problems as soon as stage 1 and had to quit the following day. It was mentally very tough to cope with. I absolutely wanted to come back. I had the opportunity on my first Dakar to see the problems I needed to cope with on site. I tested a lot during the year, changed the bodywork and suspensions on the car. I wanted to compete in the Tunisia and Pharaoh's Rally but both events were cancelled. I'm pretty sure that the car is a lot better. My goal is still to finish the Dakar. I won't be looking at the result. I'll have a new co-driver with Fabrizio (Richiardi). It's honestly more of an economical choice. He also already has experience of rallies in Africa. The Dakar is such a long race that finishing would be a victory.”
