Insurance taken out for the participants

The following two insurance policies have been set up and taken out for participants by the organiser. We advise you to examine them carefully and check that they properly complement your personal insurance policies. In case of shortcomings you should take out additional insurance.

Optional insurance (strongly recommended)

The four following policies, put in place in association with the Gras Savoye insurance broker, are optional but recommended to provide you with proper cover during the rally.

As you may know, the vast majority of normal insurance policies (particularly your car insurance, insurance provided automatically via your bank cards, household insurance, bank loan insurance, etc.) totally exclude the practice of motor sports, whether on an amateur or professional basis, and do not therefore cover the risks involved in your participation in the rally.
It is therefore important that you check the extent of the cover provided by your normal insurance policies (and the exclusions) and, if you are not sufficiently covered or not covered at all, you should contact the insurer of your choice or consider taking out the insurance policies proposed below.

  1. Individual Accident Insurance, with or without optional Medical Costs cover
This insurance is intended to provide cover when an insured participant suffers a bodily accident whilst taking part in the rally. It then provides for the payment of indemnities in case of death or permanent disablement (resulting from this accident), as well as for the reimbursement of medical costs (if that option has been chosen). This additional insurance provides cover when the insured party is the victim of an accident (except for stated exclusions), whether or not he is responsible and whether or not a third party is responsible (or identified).

Taking out this Individual Accident Insurance is of course optional, but is strongly recommended.
  2. Maritime Transport Insurance for vehicles carried by the ferries arranged by A.S.O.
This purpose of this contract is to provide cover for possible damage to insured vehicles during maritime transport between the port of Le Havre and the port of Delta Dock, then, on the return journey, between the port of Callao and the port of Le Havre.
  3. Vehicle Damage Insurance
This insurance covers insured vehicles against damage (other than minor) occurring during the rally (including both special sections and road sections), whether or not the insured party was responsible for the accident and whether or not there is an identified third party.
  4. Cancellation Insurance for participants
This insurance provides cover for the reimbursement of certain expenses laid out and payable should the insured party decline from taking part in the rally for reasons independent of his will.

These four insurance policies, whose texts and documents are available by clicking on the link below, are optional (but recommended) and can be taken out immediately, directly through Gras Savoye (website below) or, at the latest, for Individual Accident and Damage to vehicles, at the time of the administrative checks.
We would once again like to raise your awareness of the importance of possessing Individual Accident insurance with Medical Costs cover.

Medical advice

Although Argentina, Chile and Peru are not considered to be “high-risk” countries, it is better to be prudent, as prevention is better than cure. For this reason we strongly advise you to familiarise yourself with the medical information and the recommendations of Florence Pommerie, the rally’s Medical Director. The latter information, provided for preventive reasons, should in no way be a cause of worry to you but is solely intended to allow you to guard against any problems and protect yourself.

SAFETY MATERIALS ORDER

The order of the safety equipment is one of the most important steps in your Dakar preparation. Please find below a brief of each mandatory equipment (costs included in the vehicle fee) and respective order forms which are to sent back to our suppliers before middle of November. If necessary, you may add your optional choices on these forms, knowing that these costs are not included in the registration fee. This equipment will be mounted before boarding in Le Havre on 21st & 22nd November (during the technical scrutineerings in Buenos Aires for the vehicles which will not be loaded in Le Havre). You must then present your vehicles with the accessories mounted ready to fiw the equipment.

IRITRACK - DISTRESS BEACON

Iritrack is a safety instrument and must therefore be connected directly to the battery.

Iritrack enables real-time monitoring of positions and tracking of competitors, thereby making it easier to follow the race.

Iritrack enables you to transmit qualified information to the race headquarter (PCO) in real time. In the case of a problem, you can be pinpointed by the organization and even talk with them.

Fields of application are as follows:

  • triggering or requesting emergency help in case of a serious incident (for you or for another competitor),
  • transmission of an alarm and/or telephone contact with the PCO.

With two possible modes:

  • transmission of an alarm and/or telephone contact with the PCO,
  • automatic: if a brutal shock or a prolonged stop of the vehicle is detected, the system transmits an alarm message to the PCO indicating your GPS position. With the telephone function, the PCO can contact you without any action on your part (automatic receiver pick-up and inbuilt microphone) to establish a dialogue.

GPS-SENTINEL UNIK II

On the Dakar 2012, Sentinel will be integrated into GPS Unik II. For Bike / Quad please contact ERTF Company to get the new installation pack. For Car / Truck don’t forget to order the new accessories for “Sentinel” function.

Sentinel is a safety instrument and must therefore be connected directly to the battery. Sentinel is a safety system fitted to all racing vehicles. It enables to warn the competitors on the following cases:

  • The vehicle behind wants to overtake: when the driver of a car or truck presses on the push-button control, a signal is transmitted to the competing bike/quad/car/truck that he wants to overtake (range: 150 meters). The driver about to be overtaken receives an audible warning.
  • Accident warning alarm: if a vehicle represents a danger to competitors arriving on the sport (concealed behind a dune, rollover after turn), the pilot must press the two alarm buttons on his Sentinel. Then coming competitors are thus informed by an Audible Buzzer plus a Flashing Light.

TRIPY ROADMASTER - ELECTRONICAL ROADBOOK FOR ASSISTANCE

Assistance vehicules of Dakar 2011 will be fit with a “Tripy” GPS electronical Roadbook.

Tripy Roadmaster is a qualified GPS based navigation roadbook offering to the crews:

  • the automatic display of the roadbook notes (including instantaneous km countdown),
  • a Tripmaster function,
  • a warning for overspeed or upcoming itinerary danger,
  • a warning for quitting the itinerary and a navigation assistance help to rejoin it.

The navigation system warns the driver as soon as he quits the planned itinerary. In this instance, a compass arrow shows up and displays the straight line direction to follow, to reach the next WayPoint.
As soon as the track is rejoined, the roadbook resets and resumes at that point. Tripy RoadMaster, initially developed for motorbikers, offers an optimum passive safety and provides unequalled driving comfort.

CUSTOMS REQUIREMENTS

For all

As part of the Dakar 2012, we draw your attention to the customs procedures that you need to do.
The crossing of three countries (Argentina, Chile, and Peru) for this new edition requires that you make the utmost care to your paperwork.
For your vehicle and equipment you should be strict and follow the instructions provided by the organization.

In order to comply with customs requirements, and to ensure there are no problems while crossing the borders, all competitors must necessarily have in their vehicle the same spare parts as declared at the outset. (See article 9.6 (Drivers’ code) of regulations).

Every competitor must send this form by e-mail, filled in English or in spanish. We will not accept this form on paper. You must fill all the fields for each equipment, spare part etc… You must fill one form per vehicle.

Vehicles loaded in Le Havre

Competitors who will load their vehicle on the organization boat in Le Havre must return the "equipment form" before November 15th 2011 to Jean Marc Aublanc Piolot: jmaublancpiolot@aso.fr

Vehicles not loaded in Le Havre

Competitors who will not load their vehicle on the organization boat in Le Havre must return the "equipment form" before December 20th 2011 to Waiver (contact below).

Competitors who will enter by their own into Argentina, will have to make a temporary importation of their vehicles and their equipment with a customs broker. We strongly recommend that you get in touch with our service provider: Waiver Company, which was in charge of this issue for Dakar 2009, 2010 and 2011 is able to respond to a variety of customs clearance requirements (land, marine or air freight).

Vehicles not loaded in Lima

In order to close their temporary import of entry in Peru, all competitors who will not leave Peruvian territory on the boat chartered by the organization, will have to inform Waiver to meet all customs formalities.

So you have to fill a form to declare of your equipment (.xls)
