  • René Metge and Patrick Tambay decided to compete in this Dakar with a different attitude, together in a Pajero Mitsubishi
  • Ninth Dakar for Jean-Claude Olivier, the Yamaha boss, who managed to finish seven of eight and finished in the top 10 the year before.

    An animated race with an impressive series of rolls for Saby-Serieys

     

    A third straight win for the Lartigue-Périn team.

     

    Orioli took advantage of Yamaha teammate Peterhansel to win his fourth Dakar.



    The Race

  • Start in Spain for this 18th Dakar, with the prologue being run as a sort of drag race.
  • First African stage takes place in the mountains. A windy piste round numerous precipices. Vatanen wins ahead of team mate Lartigue.
  • On a dry and stony route that takes competitors over the Rekkam Plateau, the Finn Vatanen and Peterhansel win and seem to be the favorites.
  • Black day for the Dakar with the death of Laurent Gueguen Foum between El Hassan and Smara following the explosion of his truck.
    The privateer motorcyclist Thierry Rannou is also victim of a serious accident.
    In the race the leader board is modified by Bruno Saby's series of rolls.
  • Austrian rider Kinigadner breaks his engine after Smara and is forced to retire while in second place overall.
    Peterhansel and his Yamaha are victim of refuelling problems with the quality of the petrol accused as not being up to scratch. He loses 2h50 to Orioli, winner of the special.
    Yamaha's appeal concerning Peterhansel's fuel is not accepted and he retires from the race.
  • After Mitsubishi's hat trick in Zouerat, it's Citroen's turn with their four cars taking the first four places in El Mreiti. They still have
    Arcarons is the fastest in the bike class but it's still Orioli who dominates the overall lead.
  • Despite a roll Vatanen wins the longest special, between El Mreiti and Tichit. But Lartigue still is in the lead.
    First for young David Trolli in the bike class. Magnaldi, betrayed by his motor, also retires from the Dakar.
  • The big winners however are Lartigue-Perin for Citroen and Orioli for Yamaha.
    Lartigue-Perin achieve their 3rd consecutive victory, while the Italian wins his fourth Dakar and equals Peterhansel's score.
    First in T1 last year, De Lavergne takes this T2 honours.
