Safety
The type of terrain, population density and the presence of different infrastructures must be taken into consideration in the definition of a safety plan.
Areas for viewing certain special stages have been prepared for the spectators, most of whom are long-time racing fans, will be the object of a major prevention campaign. In the domain of speed control, exchange of information and deployment of means, the Dakar teams have worked with the authorities of the countries visited. Thanks to continuous cooperation, this plan will be operational throughout the race, in Argentina as well as in Chile.
Prevention, public zones
The passage of the rally needs to be preceded by an information and sensitization campaign. By reminding the rules to follow and the attitudes to have, the security message has all the chances of being listened and understood by the spectators. That is why a video clip will be broadcasted on television and on several internet websites, as well as through audio messages destined to radio stations and information pages published in different local newspapers. The Argentinean Automobile Club that works with a network of gasoline stations throughout the country also brings its support in terms of broadcast of messages.
On the course, the welcome of the fans will be organised on specifically designed zones, chosen for their accessibility, the interest for the spectators and their capacity to welcome them in security. The placement of these areas will be communicated, for each special, three days before the rally passes through the zone on the Dakar's official Internet site, as well as published in the press.
Road security: with the Agencia Nacional de Seguridad Vial
The law enforcement authorities have been associated in the selection of public zones well before the race and will also be implicated in the deployment of the plan on site (set-up, markings, surveillance, flow management, etc.). In Argentina, a partnership has been set with the government agency in charge with road security, the Agencia Nacional de Seguridad Vial, in order to surround the sometimes massive movement of aficionados of the rally. For example, added to the local authorities, 15 vehicles (30 people) will be patrolling on the main roads heading to the public zones, at the entry and exit of cities and on the roads used by the assistance vehicles.
