Franck Libbrecht: “We’re getting older and more cautious…”
Never without his mates. For Frank Libbrecht, the rally is a story of friendship more than anything else. Ten years ago, this hotel manager founded with Pascal Vincent and Patrick Arnoult, also hotel managers, the Campa Sports team. And the three are inseparable. “We also ride together”, explains the man from Roubaix. “We never separate, except if an injury occurs”. And indeed Franck Libbrecht witnessed a big one during the last Dakar. “A badly approached gorge” cost him a knee ligament rupture that took a year to heel.
So this year, he won’t take any risks: “We’re getting older and therefore more cautious…” The idea isn’t really to manage a good ranking but rather live “a great adventure, with new landscapes, a new population” and mainly to reach Buenos Aires with his two work and rally colleagues.
In 2002, Franck had failed to finish his first Dakar, picked up by the broom wagon due to a fatal fuel breakdown. In 2007, his injury had also prevented him from seeing Dakar. But the most vivid episode witnessed on the rally was back in 2005, the year when he had managed to reach the finish. “We found ourselves with around 20 bikers spending the night out in a hole due to a sand storm”, he remembers. “The stage had been neutralised, there was rain, wind, it looked like we were at Le Touquet”.
