Leo Vetterli: “Infected by the virus”
The last Dakar Leo Vetterli took part in was “six, seven or eight years ago…” he doesn’t remember very well. And the first was “about ten years ago”. No, in fact, “the first was in 2000 and the second was in 2002”. What Leo Vetterli does remember very well, however, is that each time, he dropped out due to an array of breakdowns. “I didn’t have assistance, I couldn’t get going within the allotted time”, says Leo. Entered in the rally for the third time, the Swiss now knows what he is in for. He leaves with the assistance from Team Kaiser and will this year be riding a 660 KTM. Leo says, like many, that he’s “infected by the Dakar virus”, despite being a little bit disappointed with his first attempts. “I had the impression that the more money you have the better your chances are of finishing”. Despite it all, once you’ve had a taste of the Dakar “you go back for more no matter the price!” He finances his entire budget, without sponsors. “A reward”, he offers himself – “I work all year long”, he underscores – and the price to pay for a passion of youth. “When I was around 14, I saw a poster of a motorcycle in the desert. It was a Honda, I think. And I said to myself: ‘one day I’ll go…” The new course is an even bigger motivation due to the fact he had dreamt of discovering South America.
