Christophe Meillat: «New countries, a new route: everything suits me»
He had made his decision. The 2006 Dakar, his 30th rally-raid since 1992, would be his last. Christophe Meillat, who got seriously involved in this sport following the death of friend and mentor Gilles Lalay, sincerely thought he had written the final chapter in his Dakar story. This allowed him to help his friend Thierry Bethys. His 46th place finish after a mechanical problem on the prologue in Lisbon should have been his final mention in the Dakar history books. But these past months have changed things. «I bought a Kawasaki dealership in Limoges and I really wanted to do the Dakar with this make, on a 450 that I developed before I hang up my helmet. And the idea of doing a completely new Dakar motivated me. New countries, a new route: suits me. » Christophe, who finished a personal best15th in 2001 in his eight Dakars, is ready to ride a waiting race and then attack. «It is true that I am no longer that young, but my place is in the top 20. I will try to grab a spot in the lead group in order to go on for a strong finish. » Fourth at the end of the 2007 Shamrock Rally, Christophe Meillat is in top form and, like in 2006, he will share the adrenaline of the race and the assistance service with Thierry Bethys.
