Claude Bouix: «We sold 2700 bottles of my special Dakar vintage»
To help finance his Dakar budget, Claude Bouix had the good idea to combine pleasure and practicality. He met with a wine cellar from his home region of Vaucluse to make a Côtes-du-Rhône wine « Château de Gourdon » with a special «Dakar» labeling. «A portion of the proceeds of each bottle sold will go towards my race budget», he says. «So far, we’ve sold 2700 bottles.»
Claude Bouix has come to the Dakar thanks to a 4X4 escapade in Morocco with some friends back in 2001. «I’ve always had an interest in motor racing. One day, a colleague asked me to take part in a raid and my wife came along and looked after the road book.»
Ever since, Claude hasn’t stopped racing and his wife has been with him all the way. «She did the majority of the work this year. My bike has been ready for a year and I’m ready physically, but she has to take care of all the administrative formalities.» Will she be with him in Argentina? «We’re negotiating», Claude whims.
Claude Bouix’s isn’t worried about the need for endurance as much as «the intangibles, the breakdown that can come in spite of all the energy that has been put into the preparation of the rally. It will be a different landscape in South America, which will create many unknowns and the altitude will also be an issue.»
For the rest, he is waiting to set off for «a unique experience and face an inner battle while trying to conserve as much energy as possible…when you take part in pleasure rallies, the Dakar is the ultimate happening.»
A happening he would ,one day, like to share with his 14-year old daughter and accomplished gymnast Camille. «I can see she is interested, but I don’t want to rush things.»
