Christian Califano: “I’m motivated like crazy”

“I played against the All Blacks, the Springboks, but I have the feeling that it’ll be worse”. Christian Califano expects to suffer for his first Dakar but his enthusiasm is stronger than anything. “I’m motivated like crazy”, he says. The story between bikes and the former rugby international started at his adolescence, before he started playing rugby, when a friend showed up with a brand new 80cc: “I fell in love with the bike”. Aside of rugby, Christian never gave up his passion for motorsports, riding machines like a 250 CR, a 250 YZ or a 125 RM during his years of motocross. He would watch the Dakar on TV and would think while seeing Cyril Neveu flying through the dunes that it would be “a hell of a thing” to do. This first appearance has been in his mind for 5 or 6 years now. The real click happened at the Central Europe Dakar Series. Invited to see the finish by one of his associates he adopted the atmosphere of the bivouac and met plenty of people: “The physio of the Mitsubishi team was the physio of the French national team. He introduced me to Alphand, Roma. I discovered extraordinary beings and when Frank Cornille a few days later lent me his Dakar bike, I really went for it”. His friends of the Team 100 % Sud Ouest took care of the remaining part. So here’s Christian Califano at the start of the great adventure with the only experience of having competed on the 2008 Baja España that he finished in 47th position, and the wise advice of the likes of Cyril Despres with whom he sometimes trains in Andorra: “He’s a hell of a guy. He gives me plenty of tips. He also tells me, laughing: there’s a lot of work to be done!” Not really what worries the prop.
