Vadim Pritulyak: “I’ll go to the hospital after the race”

This year, a competitor with a broken hand will take off because he refused to obey to the doctors who wanted to perform surgery before the start of the race. A competitor who didn’t know how to ride a bike four years ago. A competitor who spent nine years in the special forces of the Soviet army, writes poems and speaks Korean. This competitor is the only Kazakh of the event. This competitor is Vadim Pritulyak. Settled in Kazakhstan since 1998, Vadim Pritulyak started riding bikes when his friends gave him one four years ago. “I immediately fell in love”, explains the rider who at 41 is about to discover the Dakar. Vadim Pritulyak has since then been able to practice his riding on the tracks of various rallies, including the Shamrock last year or the Transorientale this year, a race on which he suffered a breakdown just 50 kilometres away from the finish that forced him to quit. “A bad experience, but a good experience” he explains, that allowed him to toughen and discover that “off-road rallies really aren’t easy”. For his first Dakar, Vadim could have aimed at a place in the Top 50. But his hand injury sustained four months ago after a fall during training will force him “to be careful”. It should have forced him to stay in Kazakhstan, but Vadim hadn’t even considered that possibility. “That’s the way it is. I’ll go to the hospital after the race”. An objective therefore remains for this friend of Luc Alphand and Vladimir Chagin: “To be the first Kazakh to finish a Dakar”. Whether he makes it to the end or not, Vadim will anyhow bring a touch of poetry to Argentina and Chile: “I love writing. I will take a lot paper with me; I feel that South America will inspire me…”
