Sébastien Coet: “The Dakar is mainly a question of will”
Sébastien Coet doesn’t ask himself questions. This craftsman knows where he’s going, what he wants and how to remain good during the race. “The Dakar is mainly a question of will. That’s what you need to make it to the finish. And I’m very keen, extremely motivated. It’s more mental than physical actually”.
For this Dakar on South American soil, the man from Picardie has slightly readjusted his ambitions: “Last year I was aiming at a place in the leading 60. This time, finishing the race would already be a victory”. He who is “a competitor in the soul” is obviously “delighted” of changing continents. While he hopes to see great things, he confesses he has some worries: “We will be crossing the Andes twice and we never know if the engine will resist with the altitude”.
Ten years of motocross and just as many in enduro give him a strong technical background. The 15 rallies that he competed in have given him the opportunity to gain the necessary experience to face these long races with all their upsets. During his first Dakar, this father of two had witnessed two big falls that had forced him to go to a hospital at his return in France. But the biggest fright of the race was “the moment when my bike started burning in Mauritania. I thought everything would burn. I was able to stop the fire thanks to the sand”. Nothing that bad finally. Indeed “the worst stories become the best memories…”
