Etienne Vulliet: “With my mother at Valparaiso, for the rest day”
Two years ago, one could witness the presence of three Vulliet family members on the tracks of the Dakar. In South America, there will only be one left. Due to health reasons for one and work for the other, his two brothers were forced to leave Etienne take off on his own. “My brothers won’t be there, my mother will take the plane to come and see me at Valparaiso during the rest day!” laughs the elder of the Vulliet family.
And while his brothers won’t be around, Etienne won’t be completely abandoned on the roads of Argentina and Chile. Fabrice Chirent will be riding at his side all along the course, and both friends hope to reach Buenos Aires together, as quickly as possible. To do so, their partnership will be an asset: “I’m rather good for navigation. Fabrice is a rather good mechanic”.
Etienne Vulliet is anyhow delighted to “discover Patagonia and above all the Andes Mountains”, he who is fascinated by climbing and mountains. Of his two previous Dakar races, he keeps a fond memory of the emotional finishes at the Lac Rose, but also tougher moments like the one when his brother François broke his collar bone in 2005 and had to quit the race leaving him alone to finish off the event. And the one when he broke his leg just a stage later after his bike fell on him after a fall. Etienne has an experience as a car co-driver during the Shamrock Rally. So the Dakar in a car one day? “As a co-driver, if I’m asked, it would be with pleasure. As a driver, I don’t have the financial means. You know, in the Vulliet family, Dad’s not the one who pays for the Dakar…”
