Fabrice Chirent: “I stop riding one month before the start…”
Fabrice Chirent has found a peculiar method to make the best of the Dakar: stop riding his bike one month before the start of the race to make it to the start line with even more will. “I promise that after a month, you really want to ride your bike”, explains the rider who started enduro over 20 years ago.
“Once you’ve stepped into the Dakar, you just can’t get out’’, admits Fabrice who is back this year after a first appearance in 2007 (91st). Last year, he hadn’t registered for the most famous of rallies. The reason he came back this year is ‘’for South America’’. After seeing the course, the physio expects to ‘’get plenty for his eyes”. And while he doesn’t know the terrain, he apprehends the difficulties serenely. “I live in the mountains and I believe it’ll be an advantage for me when the race hits altitude. On the other hand I must admit that I’m not really used to the heat…”
In South America, Fabrice will have with him his lucky-charm bandana and a picture of his two children just by the roadbook, “for the difficult moments”. He won’t worry about the standings but will do the race “to reach the finish with Etienne Vuillet”, his neighbour and friend with whom he had already done the 2007 Dakar, side by side. Of that first experience, he keeps a fond memory of his friend Philippe Tonin who passed away last summer during the Transorientale. “During the 2007 Dakar, Philippe had really struggled; he would often make it late to the bivouac. To finish the race with him had been a big moment. In Buenos Aires, I’ll have a thought for him”.
