Marcel Snijders : «I never give up»
Marcel Snijders shares the incredible finish of his previous Dakar as if nothing happened. “Did I make it to the end of the race? Oh yes, but on the day before the finish I crashed and was unconscious for 15 minutes. When I woke up, another competitor was calling for the helicopter. I injured my shoulder. I told them to go and I got back on my motorcycle and rode 170 kms. At the finish line on the beach, the sand was too soft and I fell again. I hurt myself again, but I got up. I had some physical problems for a month but I finished the race!”
To tell the truth, the Dutch locksmith doesn’t see anything exceptional about his extreme combativeness. “When I start something, I never give up. We put in a tremendous amount of effort and not just financial to participate on the Dakar. When you are there, you have to see it to the end. You have to be a bit crazy to do this race on a motorcycle.”
When you listen to him, you can take Marcel Snijders for a daredevil. He doesn’t, he just knows what he wants. Before setting off on his third Dakar he has set a limit for himself: “It’s important to ride at 70% of top speed, no more.” Once again, this is experience talking. “During the very first stage of my first Dakar I ran flat out and fell. I badly injured myself…I told myself I had to slow down”. Here is a competitor who doesn’t hold back. His new personal objective. “To finish in the top 50.”
