Alberto Ronconi: “My children boast quite a bit with their school friends”
Albert Ronconi has always liked speed. As a student, he was part of the national university skiing team. The discovery of bikes when he was an adolescent was to be a revelation. This passion would never leave him. His meeting with compatriot (and almost neighbour) Franco Picco – seven Dakars on a bike, including several podiums – was a turning point in the biker’s career. “He was the one to give me the taste of the desert”. It was back in 2002. The following year, a 14th spot at the Pharaohs Rally convinced him: “That was the moment when I understood I could do the Dakar”.
His first attempt saw him capture a 60th position overall as well as a small local notoriety through several press articles he carefully kept. For his second Dakar, while the objective hasn’t changed – “to reach the finish” – this year “the dream is even bigger”. South America and its gigantic stages (Ronconi: “And I already found them long in Africa…”) motivates him without however worrying him: “It’ll mainly be a race against myself”.
“My children are very proud of their father. They boast quite a bit with their school friends” laughs the Italian. So for them and for his wife for whom “it’s difficult to stay alone during a month”, he promises he won’t take any risks. “I won’t ride full blast. Maybe at 100-110 km/h instead of 150 km/h. Anyhow my Yamaha isn’t fast enough…”
