Jurgen Van den Goorbergh : «Keep the bike in one piece»
Even though Jurgen Van den Goorbergh has dedicated nearly 30 years of his career to enduro and Moto GP competition, the ex-professional rider always had the Dakar in the back of his mind. The soon to 39-year old Dutchman will now compete in the rally for the first time, without any real worries. Jurgen, an old extreme enduro hand, is in tip top physical shape. “I have been training regularly for 20 years, so I feel physically strong.”
Van den Goorbergh isn’t underestimating the Dakar difficulties. His friend Loris Capirossi has already warned him: “You are crazy to want to do the Dakar, it is dangerous”. “In Moto GP, the mental aspect is preponderant because you race in front of 100 000 people, there are all the sponsors who are present. There is a lot of money at stake”, says the Dutchman. “The Dakar is different, you have to be ready for short nights and most importantly you have to keep the bike in one piece.”
Jurgen had to work on the navigation, an area where he is a rank amateur. “I’ve read through quite a few books”, he says. But the best solution is doing it, so I rode in the Central European Rally.” The Dutchman hopes it will be a difficult rally and knows the South American terrain will pose its share of surprises. “I think it is going to be a lot hotter than the people believe. And I also I think the altitude will effect the organisms but also the machines.”
