Fabrice Monteaud: “Until now I would ride not to fall”

Fabrice Monteaud who describes himself as an adventurer and a competitor will take on his fifth Dakar. The first three times, the 48-year-old from Charente took off with no assistance. In 2001, for his rally debut, he finished the race at a promising 59th position. The following year, his engine jammed at Tidjikdja in Mauritania: he was forced to quit. But in 2004, Fabrice Monteaud enjoyed revenge by finishing 32nd overall after an ideal race without the slightest mechanical upset other than a burnt light bulb. His fourth appearance confirmed his skill. 38th in 2007, a fine result for this amateur who manages a company and dreams of going one step higher and why not enter the restricted club of the 20 best riders of the rally. Fabrice doesn’t however get over enthusiastic but calmly analyses the situation: “Until know I would ride not to fall and not to break the bike. This year I will be able to ride at my pace because I will start with a good bike and with good assistance. And therefore my physical preparation has been optimal”. Fabrice Monteaud knows that the difficulty will come from the altitude that concerns several specials. “For men and machines, it will be very difficult”. Not really enough to worry this calm competitor who admits he rides with no pressure: “My sponsors that take care of 34 of my 40 000 Euros budget, ask me to make them dream, to enjoy myself and mainly to come back”. A philosophy that suits Fabrice: “manage to be in the top 30 or 40 out of 250 bikers would be great. Better would be wonderful”.
