Peter Reif: "The opportunity of driving for a factory team"
That’s what you call a vivid memory: in 2003, the truck of Peter Reif and his co-driver Gunter Pichlbauer drove over a mine at the border between Egypt and Libya. The back of the vehicle was ripped off by the explosion but "no-one was hurt in the truck", says the driver who, except for that upset has always "reached the finish".
After taking off a first time in a car in 1988, he has appeared 12 times in the Dakar rally. This year again he’s lucky enough to have "the opportunity to drive for a factory team", the KTM Factory. At his side will be co-driver Gunter Pichlbauer, with whom he’ll be competing for the seventh time, and mechanic Andreas Holzl.
Gunter Pichlbauer is delighted to take off for another Dakar. "What I like is the desert and the adventurous spirit", explains this father of two boys. Peter Reif’s children are on the other hand "always rather worried" to see him take off on the Dakar, he explains. For a moment, he had considered stopping. But the call of South America, a “new fascinating challenge” was too strong. And one doesn’t easily get rid of a twenty year old passion.
