Cornelis Bezemer: “Two tons more than the others”

“They might have done 15 Dakars each but they have as little experience as I have in South America!” While Geert Raes will take off on his first Dakar, he will be alongside two old timers for whom he’s prepared the truck for several years without ever being able to go on board with them: Cornelis Bezemer, 61 years of age, 15 appearances and Daniel Cnudde, 53 years old, 14 appearances. These two companions who “never leave each other”, says Daniel Cnudde, (12 consecutive Dakars side by side) will both share the steering wheel this year. “At my age, I can’t drive alone anymore!” laughs Cornelis. And the crew will have quite some work to do. Indeed, once again, it will deal with its own repairs. “I have so much material in my truck”, explains Cornelis without complaining, “that it weighs 12 tons, that’s 2 tons more than the usual weight of a race truck”. Difficult in these conditions to aim at the top of the ranking, even though the driver doesn’t hesitate to mention the “Top 10”. Whatever happens, Cornelis Bezemer isn’t obsessed by performance. “I like the desert, that’s all”, he explains when asked why he returns yet again to the Dakar.
