Geert Verhoeven : «Each year the truck race is harder and harder. »
For Geert Verhoeven and his team, their Dakar mission is clear. « My principle job is to help Hans Stacey.» A mission that the Dutchman knows is primordial. Stacey’s stature as defending class winner has the squad hungry for more. « We are the team to beat », says the Dutch business owner who competes in rally-raid for the sheer pleasure of it. A situation that these day does have its limits because he had skip the Transoriental in Russia to take care of some problems in his transport company. On the other hand, when Geert can compete, he is hardly a slouch with a 10th place finish on the Dakar Series Rally of Central Europe as proof. His has quite a logical goal for the Dakar. «I would like to finish in the top 20. This is reasonable because my best result to date is a 22nd place in 2006. » With three previous participations (assistance in 2005 and in the race in 2006 and 2007), the Dutchman believes he is « still in a learning phase. » Despite the experience he has picked up, he is expecting a tough Dakar. «I know it will be fast at the beginning, then there will be the sand, followed by more fast stages. This could work in my favour. In any case, we’ll have to be strong because the Dakar is harder and harder each year.»
This year Geert Verhoeven will team with Belgian Peter Willemsen, who is back for his seventh Dakar, and mechanic Johann Van Gestel. The trio will be out to improve on their 22nd place result in 2006.
