Elisabete Jacinto: “ Finish in the top three of my category”
Over the course of several years, Elisabete Jacinto defied the male universe of motor-sport by participating in the hardest motocross competitions on various continents. However, this geography teacher, who only learned how to ride a motorbike at the age of 24 as a means of daily transport, has always fostered the ambition to constantly push herself. She is deeply convinced that willpower and toughness allow you to overcome all obstacles.
It was driven by this motto that she was not only the first Portuguese woman to take on the legendary Paris-Dakar on a motorbike, “the most difficult machine, especially for a woman” Afterwards she tried – with success- to drive a car. This native of Lisbon, who loves a challenge, took things to the next level in competing in the 2005 Dakar in a truck, just three months after getting her license.
“The truck isn’t as physically difficult as a motorcycle”, believes Elisabete. “But it is very demanding from a technique aspect. You really have no room for error, because the consequences of a minor mistake can be enormous.” In South America her Man will be that much more delicate to manoeuvre as she will have to transport all of the spare parts over the 17,000 kms. “We will have assistance at the bivouac, but not during stages..”, says the driver who is just a little “nervous about the newness” of South America, but who is aiming all the same for “the top 3 in her category”, the less than 10-litre production class trucks. She will be able to count on “a well oiled team and a family style atmosphere”, (says co-driver Alvaro Velhinho), and her husband, who will be on the rally in an assistance capacity.
