Pierrick Bonnet: “The bike trunk challenge, that’s the real Dakar”
Pierrick will be taking on his eighth Dakar. His huge experience that has now become wisdom forces him not to take the slightest risk: “I won’t go faster than I can”. The withdrawals (2004, 2005), the heavy falls (2006, 2007) and especially the death in 2005 of biker Fabrizio Meoni, a close friend of his, have deeply affected him. After that tragic episode Pierrick’s youngest daughter, now 12, had asked him at the time not to take part in the Dakar. In 2007, the man from Normandy had seriously injured himself after a fall. Not too shocked, he had one desire: “To heal quickly to be able to go back”.
Indeed each time, the taste of the challenge is stronger than all. Patrick’s challenge is special. He’s part of the candidates of the ‘bike trunk challenge’ for privateers with no assistance who after riding 700 kilometres have to sometimes deal with three hours of mechanical work on their machines before going to bed. “That’s the real Dakar”, proudly explains the biker from Caen who claimed fifth spot of that class during the last Dakar and would like to do better this time. “I want to show my friends and my clients that there’s also another race’’.
This son of a garage owner wants to transmit his passion to his children. He’s set a goal for the editions to come: to take one of his three sons of 18, 19 and 22 years of age on the tracks of the most famous off-road rally.
