Joseph Adua: “You have to know to backup sometimes”
Sand for this Catalan of the Perpignan area is a second nature. “For ten years now, I’ve been going to the dunes of Morocco, I’ve done 4 Dakar: I know that either you like or dislike the sand. I like it. And the dunes can be crossed through by well positioning the weight in your truck”. Joseph is inexhaustible on the subject even though he regrets the lack of power of his truck. “With 550 horse power, it’s only just OK. I would need 650 at least. But there are always ways to compensate in the sand, you have to know to backup sometimes or make two loops to go through”. Not too aware of the characteristics of the new Dakar, Joseph counts on his huge knowledge: “I don’t know what to think about this new course. I have no references. We’ll see”. The ambition however is still strong for the man nicknamed ‘Jo’ by his friends: “We finished third of the last Baja España, but on a Dakar, there’s a hell of a competition. The Kamaz, the Ginaf, the Tatra team as well that comes this year with a great truck that works well… That’s a dozen trucks that will be difficult to beat. Our place is by consequence in the 10-15 first”. At his side in an improved Kerax compared to the previous year, a neighbour from the Oriental Pyrenees, Gérard Dutilleul who is used to co-driving as well in a 4X4 than in a truck. The team is completed by another Catalan but this time from the south, Santiago Montsech, a professional mechanic who has only competed once in the T5 class.
