Teruhito Sugawara : «There isn’t really any competition with my father»
Teruhito Sugawara has become a master of reliability and consistency on the Dakar. He has never failed to cross the finish line in ten participations. And even more impressive is the fact that Teruhito has eight top ten results and is as good behind the wheel as he is a co-driver. As a driver, he’s only missing a podium result. But he refuses to get too excited and, like each year, he’ll line up at the start with the goal of taking top honours in his class (-10 litres) but doesn’t dare to predict an eventual win against the likes of truck stalwarts Vladimir Chagin, Hans Stacey and Ales Loprais.
Teruhito had a great teacher in the form of his father Yoshimasa, who will take part in his 25th Dakar and who has never tasted the sweet savour of success, with five runner-up finishes. A long time co-driver to his old man, Teruhito, who first competed on the Dakar at the age of 26, has been in the driver’s seat for the past four years and is now one of his father’s competitors. “There isn’t really any competition between us”, kids Teruhito. “But my father, despite being nearly 70 years old, is still very fast. If he wasn’t he’d stop.”
With mechanic Seiichi Suzuki who he’s known for ten years, the Japanese driver awaits a tough rally in the Argentinean and Chilean regions. “It will be more adventurous than when the Dakar was run in Africa”, believes Teruhito. “But we will all be in the same situation because 98% of the competitors have no experience with the terrain. “ In any case, the obstacles don’t displease young Teruhito. “The more arduous the rally will be, the better it will be for us, because on the fast tracks, the engine in our little truck isn’t powerful enough to keep up.”
