Tomas Tomecek: “My truck was stolen”
There is a certain amount of humour in the accounts of Tomas Tomecek, which would leave someone who has never participated in the Dakar incredulous. Among them, the most impressive one has to be his 1998 rally. The truck he was co-driving was “stolen” during the race by “Algerian bandits”…Theft on the Dakar, a rather rude souvenir!
But Tomas Tomecek didn’t think of it as much more than a simple risk of the job. With 12 Dakars of experience, including nine as a co-driver, Tomas Tomecek has pretty much felt everything there is to feel on the Dakar…there was the frustration of not being able to set off for Africa in 2006, following an accident on stage two. His long experience should see the Czech do well this year “in the top 10”. An objective that seems possible seeing his past performances: 11th in 2007, 2nd in 2003, 3rd in 1999… This year like in the previous ones, Tomas will count on the reliability of his Tatra, a truck he knows rather well. “When I was young, I lived 60kms from the town where the trucks were built”, says Tomas.
Tomas Tomecek will be back with Vojtech Moravek, who has done the rally four previous times. An example he hopes mechanic Radomir Smolka will follow on his maiden Dakar and who is happy to “experience it from the inside”, which he has always felt it to be “my life’s dream”.
