Helder Rodrigues: “An honour to ride at this level”
He is, with his compatriot Ruben Faria, the most promising Portuguese rider of the rally. Helder Rodrigues impressed during the 29th edition by clinching an excellent 5th spot overall after a first Dakar finished in 9th position in 2006. But the 29-year-old prodigy, just after recovering from a serious accident during the Por la Pampas rally in 2007, lived a 2008 season marked by an ever-present pain in the left arm. Throughout the year, he however continued showing that he was still well present. Fourth of the Pax Rally, claimed by his compatriot Ruben Faria, he also took part in the Dakar Series in Central Europe, finished in 14th position. His series ended with an interesting 3rd spot at the Dubai Rally in the 450cc class (15th overall). With the pain due to his accident totally out of the way, he takes on a new attempt on the Dakar. The moment comes as a challenge for the little prodigy who still keeps in mind his first years: “It was back in 1994 for a regional motocross championship. I was riding on a bike I was lent and I finished third. A real victory in fact. Today, it’s an honour to be a professional rider”. And the beginning of a fine career for the man who had been given by his father his first bike at the age of seven.
