Arkadiusz Rabiega : «From the mountain to the Dakar »
Arkadiusz Rabrega hasn’t come to the Dakar for the competition or to prove anything or test his limits. The Pole is here “for the adventure”, and nothing else. He doesn’t talk a whole lot. Like countryman and driver Aleksander Sachanbinski he does it « for a lot of amusement » Co-driver for the past two years in the Polish championship for the past two years (and champion this year), his arrival on the Dakar is nothing shocking. It is the logical next step in his profession. For the past ten years, his job has consisted of installing electronic devices in rally cars: he knows GPS and Iritrack inside and out.
He knows Chile as well. Arkadiusz surveyed the South American mountains during an altitude course four years ago. “Back then I was a volunteer mountain rescuer”, he explains. These days he no longer takes part in rescue expeditions (“I live 200 kms from the summits”), he says apologetically. Arkadiusz continues to train youngsters. This sense of solidarity, that seems natural to him, makes him the ideal Dakar competitor.
The Polish duo expects a difficult rally, especially “the long specials and the Atacama Desert.” But the expected struggles don’t faze this tandem, whose ambition is to enjoy themselves more than anything else. To participate in a rally they have wanted to be a part of for such a long time seems to be quite an accomplishment in itself.
