Gabriel Peschiera: “The battle will be fierce”
If there’s one man who was happy when he discovered that the 2009 Dakar would be held in South America, it has to be Gabriel Peschiera. The Italian, born in Lima, Peru of an Italian father and an English mother, has lived in Chile for the last 19 years and while he never was able to compete in the Dakar until now, it was due to his incapacity to go to Africa. “It’s an incredible opportunity for me that the Dakar is competed in Argentina and Chile”, says a delighted Gabriel. With his simple words, the Italian insists on the fact that not only will he be able to take part in the Dakar but he will also be on familiar soil. “I know north of Chile very well where I’ve competed for the last five years and Gabriel has already competed in Argentina”, explains his co-driver, Juan Pablo Rodriguez. “The course will be very difficult due to the long distances but also because of the dunes that are higher than in Africa with softer sand”, adds Gabriel.
The restaurant owner knows what he’s talking about. When he mentions the Dakar, only one word comes to his mouth: “the desert”, his preferred terrain. “Gabriel is a very constant and smart driver” according to Juan Pablo. “He knows exactly what he is able to do and adapts his driving accordingly”.
At home, Gabriel and Juan Pablo naturally have some ambitions on the rally. “The goal is to be the best South American crew on the race”, announces Gabriel. “The battle will be fierce, especially with the car of Jorge Latrach”.
