Christian Poirault : «It’s done pragmatically»

Christian Poirault and Yves Tartarin have both had a passion for the Dakar for a long time. While they constitute a new pairing in 2009, these friends for more than 30 years already teamed together on the 1988 Dakar. “We are very complimentary to one another”, says Christian. “Yves looks after everything technical and I concentrate more on the organisational side. We stay calm in the cockpit and never get upset. More than anything else we want to be pragmatic.”

The pragmatism comes about by a careful approach to the rally. “The objective is to go and discover unknown places”, esteems Christian, secondly, you have to make sure to make it to the end”. And the printer knows of what he speaks, because in 2003 ad 2004, he was forced to retire from the Dakar. “The first retirement was also the most frustrating: we were in 17th place overall three days from the end and we broke the gearbox when he made it to Egypt. The second one, the following year, was the result from a poor tyre choice.”

Christian also knows his body isn’t what it was the first time he braved the Dakar in 1988. “At 54, it is a little harder to neglect daily comfort and the sleep recovery phase is more important.”
