Paul Round : «To test our new car»
Nine participations on the Dakar, but just one as a driver and Paul Round never retried. For the Brit, the rally has a unique savour and constitutes a life lesson. ”The Dakar is the experience of a life”, says Paul. “When you return, you appreciate what you have a little more. The Dakar allows you to put a lot of things in perspective and avoid considering the advantages acquired.”
On the competition side, Paul remembers a misadventure when he was co-driver to his son Mark who went too quickly and damaged the car in the dunes. Now behind the wheel, Paul is doubly careful. “We want to finish the rally and taking risks doesn’t serve anything.” His co-driver Ben is on the same page. “We want to test our new car and prove that it is reliable”, says Ben. “To do that, we have to finish the rally.” They have only known each other for 18 months, and Ben, the driver in other events doesn’t have much navigation experience. “I have been practicing navigation with my wife who drives our family car.” In contrast to his driver Paul, the Brit heads into his first Dakar with big eyes. “It is a true challenge. The Dakar allows one to find his limits.”
