Frédéric Chavigny : « Stéphane is calm, I am explosive»

When listening to Frédéric Chavigny and Stéphane Singery, you soon understand these two friends, who have worked together for 16 years, are avid adventurers. Frédéric has travelled extensively and loves the extreme and is more than anything an ultra-marathoner (100kms). Stéphane lived in southern Africa for five years where he organised driving safaris in the bush where he navigated by sight. When it comes to adventures, the two have an air of having led a full life and don’t seem terribly worried about taking on the 2009 Dakar.

It is the competition aspect that could pose a problem. “In our job, we have covered thousands of kilometres together in Russia, the Ukraine and Kazakhstan, sometimes on unpaved roads in poor condition”, says Frédéric. “So we’ve learned how to drive the vehicle but we’ll have to see how we do in competition”.

The two Frenchmen start off with a simple ambition: finish the event. “We have to find our mark on the first two days and then see where we are.” They will be able to rely on their contrasting but complimentary temperaments to complete their adventure. “Stéphane is rather calm where as I am more explosive”, Frédéric admits. “I can lose my temper.” “He’s more like a bulldozer, sometimes like a bear and I’m more balanced”, Stéphane acquiesces.
