José Miguel de Fulgencio Font: “Our main priority is not speed”
He has been racing in circuits for 14 years and now, at age 38, he plunges into the Dakar. José Miguel needs adventure and he admits that like everyone in the world of motorsports, he had considered taking part in the Dakar when the good moment would come. “I’ve always liked this race but I didn’t want to do it without being sure that I could reach my goal. I wanted to do the Dakar once all the conditions were put together”. Discussions with his friend Josep Nicolás González, known as “Nico”, from Sabadell in Catalunya convinced him: “He kept telling me that I should take part. He told me about the new Hilux. And I was in.”
José Miguel’s objective in entering the race is very clear: “For a first appearance I want to reach the finish line. In a first attempt, speed cannot be the priority. My approach to this Dakar is to take it as an experience. It is the only way to do things right.” His preparation confirmed his choice: his 35th position in the last Baja España with a car ready for a Dakar therefore quite heavy, was promising: “We tested our team with Ignacio. We tested the car. And everything went well”. Ignacio Santamaria, his Argentinean co-driver will be bringing his knowledge of the terrain. Quite a few assets for José Miguel, a rookie, who lives this Dakar as a personal project. "There is no other race like this in the world. You race against yourself and against the elements. It allows you to value more life. I am not one of those people that can go off for one month to live in an island. These two weeks will really allow me to put things in life into perspective.”
