Jean-Paul Reparat: «The only buggy with an all stainless steel chassis»
«We’re not here for our health.» Jean-Paul Reparat’s and Sébastien Delaunay’s message is clear. The team that will race together for the first time on the Dakar won’t be competing just to take in the Argentinean and Chilean scenery, they will be out for a top result. «There are some 15 teams in two-wheel drive that have a chance of finishing on top in this category», says Jean-Paul Reparat.
To fulfill their objective, the two will put their hopes in the only buggy built from stainless steel. A one of a kind machine that Jean-Paul Reparat and friends built themselves over two years. «When I got involved in the Dakar, I didn’t want to do it with the same car or 4X4 that everyone else had», says the driver and boss of a metalworking business. The buggy has also caught the eye of Sébastien Delaunay. « I had many offers for this Dakar, but the home built aspect, a little bit like how it was for Jean-Louis Schlesser when he was starting out, was something that attracted me.»
In addition to its unique technical aspects, the buggy could become an important ally in certain circumstances. «This is a vehicle that is both supple and heavy», says driver Jean-Paul Reparat. «We will be able to go flat out in the holes. We know that it will get through.» The only doubt will be the sand in which the driver admits to having a lack of experience. South America has less sand than Africa and that could work in this team’s favor. Sébastien Delaunay, for one, doesn’t seem to be too worried about the geographical and geological considerations. «The Dakar legend isn’t based on the location but rather the difficulty of the race.»
