Isidre Esteve: «There are thousands of things that can be done from a wheelchair»

On March 24, 2007, Isidre Esteve crashed massively on the Almeria Rally fracturing two vertebrae. Now a paraplegic, the, once, elegant and consistent rider will never win the Dakar in which he did finish fourth in 2001 and 2005. Loyal to his reputation, Isidre did all he could to play down his situation. «There are thousands of things that can be done from a wheelchair», he immediately says. Well supported and driven by the passion of his friends, Isidre soon put a three year project together to create a new team and continue his motor racing passion in a car. «It is a fine project. For the moment, there is just one car on which I have worked on the set up throughout 2008. The first events that we took part in with my co-driver, Eric Augé were encouraging. We finished 8th overall and 4th in the production class on the Montes de Cuenca.” While Isidre has only managed to put in 3,000 kilometres with his new machine, there is something more important for the Catalan. “The most important thing is that all the steering wheel modifications proved to be reliable. The unknown for me was to know how my body would hold up to the several hours in the driver seat.” Isidre Esteve will be present in Buenos Aires for the 31st Dakar with a modest ambition of finishing the rally. The first phase of what he hopes is a sporting renaissance.
