Alain Leplat: “Six months to rebuild the Bowler”
Alain Leplat is still on cloud nine. His first Dakar, in 2007, ran to perfection. In the end, he had the joy of finishing 43rd with an additional acclaim as top car newcomer. The Belgian driver resumes this fairytale event this way. “I set of in total anonymity and when I came home I received several enquiries from the media”. This second participation is underlined with a certain enthusiasm and ambition. “I discovered an event and its atmosphere as well as an organisation above reproach. This year I want to take it farther because I know I didn’t drive to the full extent of my potential.”
Alain Leplat will line up for the start in Lisbon in a brand new Bowler Nemesis. A hell of a bet. Indeed during the Dakar Series in Central Europe, a tumble seriously damaged the car. “The Bowler was completely destroyed. It took us six months to rebuild it. We therefore decided to improve it: sequential gear box, new suspensions. It’s a new car, a better car”.
This misadventure hasn’t however tempered the enthusiasm of this determined competitor who seriously considers making it in the Top 30. “I am not a big gambler, but I like challenges”, he admits. His co-driver, new to the Dakar, is ready to accept and share the pressure. “We both have very strong characters”, says Pierre Domicent.
