Laszlo Liszi : »The Dakar is my vacation»

Laszlo Liszi has five Dakars to his credit, Jozsef Fenesi has just one. Liszi completed the 2005 edition in 66th place; Fenesi didn’t make it to the shores of Lake Rose in 2003. Both have just one objective: cross the finish line in Buenos Aires. And in as much as it will be the last Dakar for Laszlo. “The Dakar is a little bit like a vacation for me”, says the driver, who is very busy the rest of the year running his architecture firm.

For this duo the rally is in some way a “coronation” of their career as amateur competitors. Laszlo Liszi and Jozsef Fenesi have raced in the Hungarian cross-country championship since 1998. The two, despite never having attempted the Dakar in the same vehicle have competed together for the past two years and this experience could reap its benefits in the Argentinean and Chilean regions. But their programme is not only sporting. Doing the Dakar is also an important personal experience for the two Hungarians. “We work hard every day”, says this architect and owner of a business specialising in windscreen repair, “so we need other things where we try to be the best. The Dakar allows us to reflect upon our lives, about what is important and what is not even worth worrying about”.

Neither is complaining about having only a T5 truck as an assistance vehicle. “If we have a problem, no one will be able to help us in the special stages…and that’s the challenge!”
