Patrick Sireyjol: «Mr. Mayor’s chauffeur »

He will never stop. The tough as nails Patrick Sireyjol has 21 Dakars (15 motorcycle, six car) to his credit. He’ll take part in the 31st edition with the same gusto as ever and if you ask him he will tell you his regular participation in the world’s most famous rally-raid is written into his marriage contract. He has an amazing career record, often among the top ten in the bike class and now he returns to the Dakar after his strong run in 2007. With co-driver, Paul Vidal it was a 21st overall finish two years ago and both would like to crack the top 20 in 2009. Asked about his fondest Dakar memory, Patrick Sireyjol, who due to age, made the switch from two wheels to four, is unable to answer right away but when he does you better understand what kind of man he is. “I keep those that I was able to share with other competitors,” he says. You only see them once a year and yet, after so many editions, they become friends.”

Patrick and Paul are a unique pair. “I am the chauffeur for Mr. Mayor”, jokes Patrick. Paul Vidal is in fact the mayor of Toussieu, a commune of 2600 residents located in the Lyon suburbs. It took him seven attempts - four on a motorcycle, three in a car – to finally make it to Lake Rose and finish the Dakar. “A very big moment, huge emotions”, he says as he thinks back to the first time he entered the Dakar. “I had my trunk and my two wheels, that’s all.”
