Tim Coronel : «Between my wife and twin brother»
Tim and Tom are in the car. Two brothers on the Dakar in the same car is rare enough to be underscored. Even more so when they are twins. And the particularity doesn’t stop there. Tom is a professional race car driver and Tim hosts “Auto Xperience”, a popular automobile television program in Holland. Tom is a past champion in Formula 3 and touring cars, but has never competed in rallying. Tim owns an indoor karting facility and is set to take part in his second Dakar. Two years ago there was another particularity, when his co-driver was none other than his wife, who will also participate this year, but with another team.
“Between my wife and my twin brother, I have a feeling I will appreciate the bivouac”, says Tim with a smile, who will sleep “with Gaby” rather than Tom”. In 2007, Tim and Gaby finished 46th overall – “beginners luck”, Gaby says. Along with his professional driver brother, with whom he will share the driving duties, Tim has raised his ambitions: “to finish in the top 30.” Tom, who is a Dakar rookie, is more measured. “The Dakar is a rally of survival. The only thing you have to think about is finishing.”
“The Dakar corresponds to my idea of life”, says Tim. “There is something new every 100 metres. I will be taking as many photos as I can”. No matter what happens to the team, Tim knows he has nothing to complain about. “Only 200 people on earth will go all the way. It is a privilege to do the Dakar.” Thus, it only seems normal that Tim and his wife do something charitable, “because we have the means”. They have opened an orphanage in Dakar that today hosts 48 children.
