Alister McRae : «In the position of a businessman»

Alister McRae never saw himself taking part in the 2009 Dakar, but things have a way of changing and the Scot will embark on the adventure, both as a driver and as the leader of his team. “The basic idea was to prepare the cars for the Baja races, but we realised that our customers were more interested in the Dakar and then an opportunity presented itself for me to drive”, says Alister, the brother of 1995 world rally champion and former Dakar participant Colin who died in a helicopter accident a little more than a year ago.

While Alister is heading to Argentina and Chile, he admits that it is not uppermost for the competition, but more for his team and his business. “I am here most of all to support my team and make sure all of our cars finish. I am not here to race for a result, but simply to go all the way, because the Dakar is still a very difficult rally.”

Yet, the Scot is a fierce competitor, with some 10 years of world rally championship experience to his credit. So, will he take it easy? “It will be hard not to attack, but I have to put myself in the position of a businessman and not one of a competitor”, he says. “But after one or two stages and if everything goes well, we will push the car just a bit.”

While Alister has already competed in South America, this will be is first Dakar. “I believe we will encounter a tremendous variety of terrain and all sorts of conditions”, predicts McRae. He will be able to rely on an experienced co-driver in Dutchman Chris Leyds, who has seven Dakars behind him. “The Dakar is 20% race, 20% technique and 60% the person himself, the human factor”, judge’s Chris.
