Ricardo Leal dos Santos : « The best Dakar of all time»

Ricardo Leal Dos Santos has already raced in the Dakar five times, but the sixth will obviously be particular. He will compete for the first time …with a co-driver. For this regular of raids in solo (three times on a quad and twice in a car without a navigator), this will be a tiny revolution, which is explained in the new ambitions of the Lisbon native. “This year; my car is a lot more competitive and faster than before. It is too fast for me to do the race alone. It would be too dangerous.” Ricardo’s idea is to progress as fast as possible, « with goal of being included in a factory team”, which would allow him to finish in the top 8 in the rally.”

Ricardo will thus be seconded by countryman Pedro Pires de Lima, who already took part in the rally in 2006 with Luis Costa. He already had a situation with who will now be his driver: “Ricardo was stuck in the sand 10 metres from where I was stuck with my driver at the time”, recalls Pedro. “But we didn’t see him right away because we were on opposite sides of the dune. The race is thousands of kilometres long and we were stuck in the sand just 10 metres away from one another! Finally, we helped each other and we were all able to get going.”

“We are going to experience the greatest Dakar of all time”, predicts Ricardo Leal dos Santos. “Not only the terrain but the scenery looks to be wonderful, but in addition, I think that welcome from the public will be incredible.” The new continent could serve these new ambitions. “The rookies like me have an advantage compared to those who have done 20 Dakars in Africa. “ And thus, the goal is greater: the top 20, to which Pedro adds: “We really want to be the highest placed Portuguese team.”
