Isabelle Patissier: «A grain of sand and it is a mechanical breakdown »
Double world rock climbing champion, Isabelle Patissier sky rocketed to the top level of rally-raiding. In 2004, after just two years of competition, the rock climbing queen became the first women to win the Production category in the World Cup.
In six participations, she has made a name for herself on the Dakar. Three results between 39th (2006) and 24th (2004), she prefers not to make any predictions. “The first goal is to finish the Dakar, as for the rest, we’ll see during the rally”, says Isabelle. “Everything can change from one day to the next, a grain of sand and it is a mechanical breakdown.” If a problem does arise, Isabelle isn’t overly concerned, and with good reason, because she can rely on the 21 years of Dakar experience of one of the best co-drivers in the sport, Thierry Delli-Zotti. «I have complete confidence”, she explains. “If something does happen and we can’t fix it that means there is really nothing that can be done.”
Even though she swears she isn’t worried about the mechanical side, Isabelle, herself, got here hands a little dirty this year to be sure their buggy is ready for the rally. “We worked together for six months on this car,” says the driver. « I learned a lot.”
Co-driver, mechanic, or driver, Thierry has done it all on the Dakar. “I prepared my first car for the Dakar in 1984 and I’m still here. I don’t know if I’ll be able to stop one day.” The constructor is very interested in the idea of the rally taking place on the other side of the Atlantic. “We have returned to the essence of rally-raid, the discovering of new countries”, Thierry adds. “For me, the Dakar has always been a vector for adventure and discovery. “ Thierry has confidence in his team mate. “We have the same character, but Isabelle is a lot more competitive, so it is up to me, from time to time, to calm her enthusiasm.”
