Bernard Errandonea: “You never know what can happen”
Bernard Errandonea is definitely not a driver like any other. “I was lucky to come across him”, says his co-driver Jean-Pierre Garcin; who knows what he’s talking about (10 participations as a co-driver on the Dakar). “It is a philosophy, he’s an impressive driver, a gentleman driver. His skill level is as good as that of some of the more well known pros.” Bernard doesn’t talk too much about his driving. He just says, “You must never stop on a Dakar and continue to remain ahead yourself”.
In three Dakars (2003, 2006 and 2007), the Basque competitor’s reputation has steadily grown. Accompanied by his veteran co-driver, this year he’ll try to do just as good, if not better than his excellent 12th overall finish in 2007. “We’re going to try to do better”, simply admits Jean-Pierre Garcin. A place in the Top 10 is obviously something to be considered: “We know each other well. The car has improved. We’ve worked on the suspensions with anti-roll bars and new shock-absorbers”.
Bernard Errandonea doesn’t have to worry too much about the technical side. He and Jean-Pierre share the same passion for the Dakar. “What I like about this race is the unexpected”, says the driver. “You never know what can happen. That’s why this race is so interesting it’s never the same”.
