“The ambition is big… maybe too big!”
Here are two men who know their car by heart. Poland’s Krzysztof Holowczyc and Belgium’s Jean-Marc Fortin will take part in their fifth Dakar. After failing to finish in 2007 after a huge crash, they managed an outstanding performance in South America, finishing 5th overall in their Nissan Navarra prepared by Fortin’s team Overdrive. Obviously after doing so well, driver Holowczyc feels even hungrier: “The ambition is big… maybe too big! And to go one step higher won’t be easy”. Three time Polish rally champion and 1997 European title holder, Krzysztof Holowczyc made the best of the very technical 2009 course: “Last year there were a lot of WRC type stages so it made it easier for us (2nd and 3rd of the last two specials). This year there will be a lot more sand but our car is also good on sand. And after having competed on the Dubai Rally, everything seems easy when it comes to dunes”.
So to do better than 5th, there are several factors to respect. The crew, often considered as slightly crazy, will have to be extra cautious: “We’ll have to push but not over the limits, says the Polish driver. We like speed, we like when the car is flying. But we won’t be able to keep the same tempo all the time”. For their fifth appearance, the European crew has obviously gained in experience, maturity and wisdom. “We know that there will be a great battle between the top teams, that the favourites will take crazy risks and probably have technical problems. We’ll have to make the best of that…”
