Stéphane Henrard: “The course is favourable to two-wheel drive cars”

With close to 10 Dakars on his record, Stéphane Henrard has often played the leading parts. Often not hesitating to take part in the great stories of the event like in 2007. Stéphane was reticent before finally starting the rally. Suffering from kidney stones, the doctors advised him not to take part but that wasn’t enough to stop him. In driving for two weeks with a probe in his gut, he crossed the finish line 10th overall...quite an accomplishment. This year, he comes with the ambitions of a natural Top 10 candidate or even Top 5 in his new buggy: “We have a brand new car and I don’t know how it will go. We took an option with my engineers: to keep the Volkswagen TDI engine with a gear box that we know well but change the chassis for a lower and more agile car, adapted to the tracks. The contrary of a hole ‘swallower’ like Robby Gordon’s Hummer. We’ll see. But I’m optimistic due to the fact that the course should be favourable to two-wheel drive cars”. Stéphane will be helped out by Serge Bruynkens. The Flemish has five Dakars to his credit as a co-driver and he is itching to try his hand behind the wheel but he is content to fulfil his role: “It is an honour to be Stéphane’s co-driver. He has taught me a lot”. An apprenticeship shared with the Belgian viewers of a daily program on RTBF. On the show: the discovery of Argentina and Chile through nature and adventure in the largest sense of the word, as well as the non sporting aspect of the Dakar. “I take care of my chronicle every evening after the finish and add a little contest. It works out well. I’m happy to share the Dakar in that way”.
