Philippe Cottet: “The Vectra team is my big opportunity”
Philippe Cottet’s off-road rally career has witnessed a serious boost. Thanks to three Dakars finished in fine fashion (53rd in 2001, 31st in 2005 and 29th in 2007, out of just three appearances), the talented Swiss rider has been picked by the private team of biker and Romanian businessman Marcel Butuza. “It’s the first time that a private team is at this level. There are seven nationalities represented. It’s a big structure with big ambitions because there are indeed former official team riders. For me it’s a great opportunity because it’s very professional”. An official KTM Switzerland rider the remaining part of the year, Philippe intends to bring his experience and his team spirit. With 20 years of enduro behind him and a rather busy sporting agenda, Philippe comes on the Dakar with quite some confidence, comforted by the clean image of his new team Vectra that has a philosophy that suits him well: “Each one of us will ride his own race. No-one will be the water-carrier of another rider. There won’t be briefings every evening: the race will be decided between us”. Once again well prepared, Philippe shows up as fit as can be: “Also because I did the ‘Patrouille des Glaciers’ race. It’s a 70 kilometres long alpine skiing race, going up and down 8000 metres”. A physical condition maintained “during a month of December, totally different to those that I lived before my previous Dakar rallies”. Calm moments before the big battle.
