Eric Croquelois: « In January it is do the Dakar or make love»
Eric Croquelois is a phenomenon. Ask him why he has entered his eighth Dakar and he’ll answer in a wise guy tone in saying «I have nothing else to do in January» and that «it is the Dakar or make love.» He thus has chosen the rally.
The Frenchman speaks frankly and with humor at all times. His adventure on the Dakar, shared with his «mate» Jean-François Jayez is already rich with anecdotes. He experienced a nightmare on his first escapade in 2001, losing 12 kilograms but finished 33rd. The following year he broke his sacrum and coccyx; in 2005 he fractured his tibia and fibula.
The 1.79m, 84kg Eric is a warrior ,«all muscles», as he likes to kid, but is nonetheless, even at 45-years of age, one of the sure bets on the Dakar. Even though in the past he has systematically finished in the top 35 and on occasion flirted with a top 20 result he claims he doesn’t have a specific goal heading into the 2009 edition. And with reason, Croquelois has a busy schedule and it is his pre-race preparation that has paid the price. «With work, I have no time at all to train’, he states with regret.
Eric Croquelois is a lover of Africa but is excited about the idea of heading to South America. Because this mechanic by trade is a prankster, he also sets off on the Dakar to live a special human adventure, «I am also up for meeting new populations», he says with a hint of seriousness.
